Dr. Yukiko Goda is a Deputy Director of RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) and heads the Laboratory for Synaptic Plasticity and Connectivity in RIKEN CBS. She received her BSc from the University of Toronto and her PhD from Stanford University. After her postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute, she joined the faculty of Biology Division, University of California, San Diego in 1997. She then moved to the UK in 2002 as a Senior Group Leader in the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at University College London, and in 2011, moved back to Japan to the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, a predecessor to the RIKEN CBS.
Dr. Goda’s research interests center on synapses, the fundamental nodes of information transmission in the brain. The laboratory investigates the cellular principles by which synaptic strengths are set and dynamically modified at individual synapses in relationship to other synapses in defined neural circuits. Recent efforts of the laboratory also target roles for astrocytes in synapse regulation.
