Martin Jinek is Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Zurich. His research explores (i) RNA biology and (ii) CRISPR-Cas systems and their applications in genome editing technologies. Martin Jinek studied at the University of Cambridge (UK) and received his PhD from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg (Germany). His postdoctoral research with Prof. Jennifer Doudna, at the University of California, Berkeley, made fundamental contributions to the development of CRISPR-Cas genome editing. In 2013, he joined the University of Zurich, where his research group continues to study mechanistic aspects of CRISPR-associated nucleases.
