Siomi was a post-doctoral fellow at HHMI, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she studied the fmr1 gene, the cause of fragile X syndrome, to understand how the loss-of-function causes mental retardation. She also studied nuclear transport machineries to understand the molecular mechanisms. In 1999, Siomi became an Assistant Professor at the University of Tokushima, Japan, where her study started to focus on small RNA-mediated gene silencing in Drosophila. In 2008, Siomi became an Associate Professor at Keio University School of Medicine, Japan, and is currently a Professor at Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo, Japan.
