Lara started her editorial career at Cell Press in 2005 working at Structure and Chemistry & Biology (now Cell Chemical Biology) and moved to Cell in 2007. There, she expanded from her early interests in molecular mechanisms to embrace the broad scope of the journal. She became the editor-in-chief of Molecular Cell in November 2024, reclaiming her molecular biology roots and curiosity about how things work inside cells. Lara earned her doctorate at the University of Colorado working on catalytic RNA with Thomas Cech and did post-doctoral work at Yale with Joan Steitz and Scott Strobel investigating how small nucleolar RNPs assemble. Lara encourages all authors to have someone from outside their field read their manuscript for overall presentation and flow before submitting their paper to any journal. She is based in the Cambridge office..
