Anna Kreshuk holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Heidelberg and a Diploma in Mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University. In between the two degrees, she worked at CERN in Geneva as a scientific programmer for the ROOT framework.

Dr. Kreshuk is now a Group Leader and a Senior Scientist at European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), also serving as the Interim Head of the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit. Her research lies at the interface of AI and biology and focuses on machine learning–based methods for the analysis of biological images, with particular interests in large-scale image and volumetric segmentation, sparse and weak supervision, multimodal data integration, and the learned characterization of visual phenotypes. She is passionate about the democratization of machine learning in the life sciences and leads the development of the ilastik software, which aims to make advanced image analysis methods accessible to researchers without computational expertise. The ilastik team is also part of the collaboration behind the BioImage Model Zoo initiative, which promotes interoperability and easy sharing of deep learning models for microscopy.
