Professor Alan Rowan Professor Alan Rowan became Director of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at the University of Queensland in 2016. He oversees a team of more than 500 research and professional staff working in an integrated, multi-disciplinary research institute at the interface of biology and nanomaterials, that brings together world-class researchers and cuttingedge technology with a focus on translational research in Advanced Nano-Structured Materials, Precision Nanomedicine and Biomanufacturing. Professor Rowan obtained his PhD and first-class honoursin chemistry from the University of Liverpool and 1991 and joined the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, where he rose through the ranks to become full professor. Professor Rowan performs his research at the interface of chemistry and biology with pioneering work in the areas of functional materials, biomimetic processive catalysis, synthetic extracellular matrix materials and single enzyme kinetics He has published than 400 publications with over 22,000 citations (h index 76), including 16 high-impact publications in Nature, Science, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, and Nature Chemistry. Professor Rowan was awarded the RSC Soft Matter and Biophysics Prize in 2014, an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship in 2017 and became a Fellow of the Australian Academic in 2020.
