Maria Carmen Gómez Cabrera. Full professor in the Department of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Valencia.
Main research line: My research focuses on developing interventions in aging, with particular emphasis on the role of physical exercise as the most effective strategy for improving healthy aging. Over the past 25 years, I have contributed to elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of exercise in preventing and treating various age-related pathologies, mainly musculoskeletal. As a Principal Investigator, I lead a research team with dual affiliation to both the INCLIVA Health Research Institute and the University of Valencia.

Scientific divulgation and collaborations: I have participated as an invited speaker in more than 60 international meetings for societies such as SFRBM, ICFSR, ECSS, ACSM, Gordon Research Conference, SFRR-E and SFRR-I. Regarding my public-private collaborations, I have been principal investigator in 10 and have participated as co-applicant in 27 research projects, four of them from the European Commission.

Bibliometrics and especially contributions: During my 4 research sexennial periods (2000-2023), I have co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed international publications in journals such as Nature, Nature Metabolism, Science, JAMA, Nat Commun, Nat Chem Biol, FASEB J, J  Physiol, Aging Cell, among others. My contributions in the broad areas of exercise redox biology, skeletal muscle cell signalling, healthy aging, frailty, and sarcopenia have accumulated over 15.500 citations (h-index 52. Scopus). I am listed among the top 2% most cited researchers in the Shanghai Ranking of Medical Schools for the year 2024.

Research awards: My research has been recognized with international research awards such as the Catherine Pasquier Award, in 2014 (awarded by the SFRR-E), and national awards, such as the García Blanco Medal awarded by the Valencian Studies Foundation Advanced (2004). I have also received the recognition by the CIBERFES for my research career (2020), FECYT distinction as one of the researchers with the greatest impact at a national and international level in “physical activity and health” (2021).

Scientific responsibilities: I am the deputy scientific director of the basic research area at the Research Institute INCLIVA accredited as a Health Research Institute by the Carlos III in 2011. I also lead a team and I am a member of the CIBERFES Steering Committee, strengthening the strategic alignment among molecular studies, clinical translation, and public health initiatives focused on frailty in Spain and internationally.

Young researchers’ career: I have supervised 21 PhD theses, several of which were international, and most of them have yielded strong publication outputs and led to successful academic, clinical, and research careers.

Panel/editorial tasks: I have been editor of Redox Biology for four years (IF: 11,9; Q1). Currently, I am “Deputy-in-Chief” of Sports Medicine and Health Science (IF: 2,3; Q2) and Associate Editor of Free Radical Biology and Medicine (IF: 8,2; Q1).
