Speaker
Prof. Burkhard Becher is Chair of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich, where he leads the Inflammation Research Unit. He studied Biology at the University of Cologne and completed his PhD at McGill University, exploring microglia and T cells in CNS autoimmunity. His postdoc at Dartmouth Medical School with Randy Noelle focused on in vivo manipulation of microglia in neuroinflammation. Recruited to Zurich in 2003, he became full Professor in 2008.
His research centers on cytokine-mediated communication between immune cells, particularly in neuroinflammatory diseases and cancer. He is known for groundbreaking work on myeloid–lymphoid interactions and cytokines such as GM-CSF, IL-12, and IL-23, using high-dimensional profiling, disease models, and transcriptomics.
Prof. Becher has received numerous honors, including an ERC Advanced Grant and consistent recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher. He serves on editorial and advisory boards and actively mentors emerging leaders in immunology.
