The Human Microbiome Research Institute (HMRI) at Cedars-Sinai is committed to supporting investigators across multiple disciplines who study the microbiome—the bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in and on the human body. The HMRI team’s goal is to enable deeper research into how microbiota may cause or prevent illness to aid the development of new treatments.

Our Mission:
To reduce the barriers to entry in microbiome-based research through technical, educational and collaborative platforms; and to advance the microbiome field by providing mechanistic, human data across disciplines that leverages the unique strength of clinician-researcher relationships at Cedars-Sinai.

Our Research:
The HMRI facilitates research across all clinical disciplines and specialties, with priority areas in cancer, early life, gastrointestinal diseases, metabolism and autoimmunity. The HMRI additionally has two flagship projects focused on the effect of diet on the microbiome in health and disease, and genetic modification of gut microbes.
