Speaker

Dr. Michael Howitt is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University. His laboratory investigates how intestinal epithelial cells sense and respond to the dynamic microbial environment of the gut, focusing particularly on specialized sensory cell types like tuft cells. By combining techniques from immunology, microbiology, and epithelial cell biology, Dr. Howitt’s research explores how the gut epithelium coordinates mucosal immunity, maintains equilibrium with commensal microbes, and responds to microbial metabolites. His recent studies have highlighted the role of commensal protists in shaping gut immunity and microbiota composition, uncovering novel mechanisms of host-microbe interactions. This work provides insights into epithelial-immune communication, with implications for understanding how disruptions in these interactions may lead to dysbiosis and disease. Dr. Howitt received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard University.
