Sydney M. Shaffer, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania and an investigator in the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute. Her laboratory studies why genetically similar cancer cells follow different fates during cancer development and treatment. The group combines single-cell measurements, lineage tracing, perturbation, and spatial profiling to connect cell state with clonal history and future behavior. Her work seeks to distinguish pre-existing resistance from treatment-induced plasticity and determine whether disrupting the mechanisms that maintain resistant cell states can restore treatment sensitivity.
