Caixia Gao

Caixia Gao is a principal investigator at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prior to joining IGDB, she worked as a research scientist at DLF, a global seed company based in Denmark. Her research focuses on developing cutting-edge plant biotechnologies—including precision genome editing, in planta directed evolution, delivery platforms, and regeneration systems—to dissect genetic mechanisms and engineer key agronomic traits. Her work has received broad recognition, including selection by MIT Technology Review as one of its “10 Breakthrough Technologies” (2016), authorship of one of the most cited papers in Nature Biotechnology over the journal’s 20-year history, and inclusion in one of China’s “Top 10 Science Advances” (2023). She has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher every year since 2009 and was recognized as a Tencent New Cornerstone Investigator (2023) and one of Nature’s “Ten Science Stars of China” (2016). In 2025, she was elected as an EMBO Associate Member and currently serves on the editorial boards of Science, Cell, and Molecular Cell.
