Penny Moore

Prof. Penny Moore is the South African Research Chair of Virus-Host Dynamics, Research Professor and Academic Head of the Divisions of Virology and Immunology at the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in South Africa. She is Director of the Antibody Immunity Research Unit, an extramural unit of the SA Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and holds a joint appointment as Honorary Senior Scientist in Virus-Host Dynamics at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research (CAPRISA), University of KwaZulu-Natal. She directs a team of more than 15 scientists and 10 postgraduate students who work in the field of HIV and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine discovery, combining Virology, Immunology and Bioinformatics. Her research is funded by the NIH, the South African Medical Research Council, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the SA National Research Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In the past 18 years, she has contributed towards more than 150 papers, focusing predominantly on HIV and SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies and their interplay with the evolving virus, a result of extensive collaborations within South Africa and internationally. She has an H-factor of 42 and holds a NRF B1 rating. She has a very strong focus on mentorship and capacity development and supervises several postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows within her lab and across other institutes.
