Prof. Ruth Ley is Director of the Department of Microbiome Science at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, Germany. Prior to 2016, she was faculty at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Her post-doctoral training with Jeffrey Gordon at Washington University School of Medicine included the first descriptions of the gut microbiome in obesity. She is a Packard Fellow, a Beckman Fellow, and has received the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, the ISME Young Investigator Award, and the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine. She is a member of the American and European Academies of Microbiology, and of EMBO.
