Prof. Boeckxstaens obtained his medical degree in 1987 and his PhD degree in 1991. In 1994, he completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine / Gastroenterology and accepted a staff position in the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2005, he became Professor of Neurogastroenterology at the Academic Medical Center and was appointed co-chair of the department of Gastroenterology and head of Gastrointestinal Research. In 2007, he accepted a full professorship in Medicine at the University of Leuven (Belgium) in the department of Gastroenterology. He received several national and international prizes and received the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant in 2014 and in 2019. Currently, he is Associate Editor of Gut, and has published over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has an H-index of 69. The scientific expertise of the research group of Prof. Boeckxstaens relates to neurogastroenterology and neuro-immune interactions in the gastrointestinal tract. The mechanisms leading to diseases such as achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel disease, chronic constipation, functional dyspepsia and postoperative ileus have been the main topics of interest over the past 20 years.
